N. N. Antipov, A. V. Klepikov. The cyclonic gyres of the East Antarctica coastal seas

The results of study of the large-scale circulation in the sub-polar region of the Southern Ocean along the East Antarctica coast are described. The geostrophic currents and maps of properties distributions in the core layers of the deep and sub-surface water masses based on the comprehensive data set are presented. It is shown that the cyclonic gyres are the main features of the circulation of the East Antarctica coastal seas. The geographical positions of gyres are established and strong topographical control of circulation of the gyres is demonstrated. The role of oceanographic factors in the formation of the persistent Cosmonaut Sea polynya is shown.
